CHAPTER 18

Kyle’s jaw was tense as he settled in front of Taylor and I. He had just gotten back from seeing Sarah Jane, and the look on his face told me things had gone about as well as I thought they would have.

“She just needs a bit more time,” Kyle said, plopping down on the couch across from us. He ran a hand through his hair as he continued. “It was a big shock to her, and as such, she just needs a little space to figure things out. That being said, I do think she’ll come around eventually.”

“And how long is eventually, Dr. Kyle?” Taylor asked, sighing loudly. “She’s about two days away from having my baby, and I’d really like to be invited to the hospital when that happens if it’s at all possible.”

“That’s hard to say, Taylor,” Kyle replied. “The truth is that everybody is different. When things like this happen, reactions can vary wildly. Judging by just how betrayed SJ feels, though, I’m guessing it’ll take more than a few days for her to get over this.”

“Perfect,” Taylor groaned.

“It won’t,” I said, shaking my head. “I know my daughter. She might be upset now, but she’s got a good head on her shoulders and she understands that the right thing doesn’t always come in pretty packages. She’s hurt. I know that, but she’s also the same girl who grew up watching Denise deal with me and my job. It’ll take a few more apologies. It might take a few hundred more apologies, but she’ll forgive us. I know it.”

“I hope you’re right,” Taylor said.

“I am, “ I replied. “But even if I wasn’t, my daughter isn’t the kind of woman who would stop you from being there for the birth of your child.” I looked over at Kyle. “How is she, Kyle? Did you speak to the doctor?”

“SJ’s doctor was busy in surgery the whole time I was there. Apparently, it was a big day for c-sections. I did talk to Eden, though, who assured me that she wasn’t going to leave your daughter’s side for a second. She’s even going to spend the night with her after her shift ends. They’re going to watch something called ‘Maxon Hall’, which Eden assures me is ‘buzzin’.” Kyle put the last word in air quotes; an act which pulled a reluctant smile from me.

“Thank God for that girl,” I said, even though I had no idea what Maxon Hall was or why it was so good. All that mattered to me was that-even in a time like this, my daughter didn’t have to be alone.

“I do think we need to talk, though, Jack,” Kyle said, shuffling a bit as he looked at me.

“Sure. What’s up?” I asked.

“I’ll give you a minute,” Taylor said.

“Is that necessary?” I asked, looking over at Kyle.

Before he could answer, Taylor did. “It’s okay. I need to take a shower anyway. I haven’t had time, and I still have the blood of an innocent woman on me.
